Not a phonecall I wanted

Had a call from Chloe’s Paediatrician yesterday, they are becoming really concerned about her growth.

He explained to me that she is now starting to look not so good on the Noonan’s growth chart and that if she doesn’t start to show a satisfactory increase over the next couple of weeks they are will be wanting to admit her into hospital for a couple of days so they can insert a Nasogastric tube.  This is something that I really was hoping that we could and hopefully still avoid.

They are wanting us to keep pushing solids with her and also the fat supplement.  I expressed my concerns of forcing these onto her and he agreed that we don’t want her to get a oral aversion.  The problem is that she already shows signs of this, she has already gone on boob strike a few times . . . there is no forcing my strong willed daughter to do anything she doesn’t want to.  Everything has to be done on her own terms, which is fair enough cause everybody deserves that kind of respect.

She is very picky to what she will accept to taste on a spoon.  Luckily this week she is back to accepting a tiny amount of banana in the mornings on the spoon but come lunchtime she will squirm and cry if she sees that spoon.  But if I give her a taste of what I’m eating she will accept that and also if I spread her puree on a Cruskit she will chew and lick it off.  We aren’t talking big amounts at all, so it’s not going to help her weight at all but I still see it as progress.

Now that she is feeling better from a cold she is back to breastfeeding every hour to 2 hrs, and also waking most nights 3 to 4 times a night for a feed . . . I really don’t know what else we can do to make her grow.  If her body doesn’t want to grow it doesn’t.  I’m worried that if I start to force the fat supplement down her like I did with Duocal (which I’ve now learnt with her that I shouldn’t of ), she is going to become that unhappy and not learn the important developmental skills that she needs to.

I can only try my best and HOPE that we can avoid the NG tube and a stay at the hospital.

Bless you, hoping that Chloe eats some yummy caloric filled yummy food every day for you. You are doing an amazing job Mum at keeping her well fed 24/7, so draining for you, but you still keep going, Chloe obviously gets a lot of her strength from her Mum! If the possible next steps the Drs are suggesting happen – know that you will have done everything humanly possible to help her with her weight gain, fingers and toes are all crossed x
